What are the entry requirements for Mexico?
Let’s start with the easy one just for clarification. Mexico does NOT require a COVID-19 test for entry. You only need to fill out a health questionnaire before arrival and then again on departure. We recommend doing this online before your flight by visiting this link: Mexico Travel COVID-19 Health Questionnaire. The questionnaire will give you a QR code that you should take a screenshot of to show the Mexican health officials at the airport. At the airport they will also take your temperature and may ask if you have any symptoms. All airlines are requiring that passengers wear masks on the plane and it is a law in the state of Baja California Sur that you must be wearing a mask in public spaces. There are also restrictions on how many people can be in one place, social distancing, etc which we will talk a little bit more about below. There is also NO mandatory quarantine on arrival or anything like that. The government, Visit Los Cabos, and all of the hotels, restaurants, and tour operators have worked very hard to be able to have special certifications and protocols so that you can still enjoy Los Cabos safely. The Los Cabos International Airport was the second airport in the entire world to receive the Airport Health Accreditation Award. For more information on COVID related travel info and updates for Mexico please visit the Mexican Department of Health website. You can also call 800 0044 800 from within Mexico.
What do the new US & Canadian Travel Restrictions Mean for me?
If You Are Traveling From/To The USA
Beginning on Jan 26th, 2021 all airline passengers above the age of two returning to the US will be required to show proof of a negative viral test (PCR or Antigen test) within 72 hours before the flight. A valid documentation of the laboratory test or documentation of having recovered from Covid-19, either paper or electronic copy, must be presented at the airport prior to boarding the flight back to the United States. However, don’t let this affect your travel plans, as Los Cabos has made the test extremely easy and cost effective to obtain so as to not hinder travel plans. The antigen test is available at several convenient locations, including hotels, timeshares, and now even at the airport! The cost starts as low as $25 USD and take only 30-40 minutes to receive the results. Some hotels are even offering the test as a courtesy service to their guests. Additionally, just across the street from Dive Ninja is a lab called Laboratorios Helena that offers the Antigen test for 800 pesos ($40). No appointment is needed and the results are emailed to you within 1-2 hours. So if you’d like to skip the line at the airport you can just stop by the lab before or after your diving tour, course, or expedition with us.
For more information on PCR and Antigen test locations check out the Visit Los Cabos COVID Travel & Testing Information web page here or their COVID testing facilities list by clicking here. The COVID Testing Facilities list is a PDF that includes the locations, names, pricing, test results time, and contact information for each place making it super easy to find the most convenient place for your trip. If you test positive, you will be required to quarantine until cleared for travel (currently the CDC recommendation is 10 days). However, you will be allowed to quarantine at your hotel or preferred lodging option and hotels and resorts will offer special accommodation and discounted rates to ease the process. We highly recommend getting Dive Assure travel insurance or another travel assurance such as Allianz that helps to cover any trip cancellations or extra incurred costs related to COVID and your trip.
If You Are Traveling From/To Canada
Starting on January 7th, 2021 the government of Canada has new travel restrictions requiring all air passengers five years of age and older to provide proof of a negative PCR test result 72 hours prior to the scheduled departure time. The proof can be a printed or digital copy. All airlines and private operators will require a negative test result documentation including the following information: traveller name, date of birth, name and address of the lab/clinic/facility that administered the test, date that the test was conducted, method of test conducted (PCR), and the test result. Even if you have had the vaccine, a negative PCR test will be required to board the flight. The PCR test can be taken at hospitals and labs around the Los Cabos area. Some hotels are also offering them to their guests as a courtesy too, so it’s always great to check with your hotel to see if they offer it in house. They are also available at the airport for $1250 MX Pesos, but remember it can take 24-72hrs so you would need to be tested a few days before your flight home which makes the airport not the most ideal place for PCR tests. Additionally, just across the street from Dive Ninja is a lab called Laboratorios Helena that offers the PCR test. No appointment is needed and the results are emailed to you within 24-72 hours. So you can just stop by the lab before or after your diving tour, course, or expedition with us. There are many other facilities in Los Cabos to obtain PCR tests. How open is Mexico? And what about border closures?
This is something we get asked a lot. International flights to and from Mexico and the US and Canada are open and running. The borders to Mexico have never been closed to international travellers throughout the pandemic. The confusion comes from the land border closures. The land borders between Canada, Mexico, and the US have been closed since March 2020 to all non-essential travel. This was recently extended until May 21, 2021 and most likely will be extended again, however this has no effect on air travel between the countries, and only affects those driving across the borders for non-essential travel purposes. The Los Cabos economy relies heavily on tourism, therefore the locals have worked very hard to keep activities open for tourists by complying with Covid-19 health and safety standards within the community. This has allowed us to safely operate diving, whale-watching, snorkelling, and ocean-related activities with strict maximum capacities and protocols. To learn more visit our Covid-19 standards and procedures page. However, rest assured, when you arrive in Cabo it will feel like an escape from the rest of the lockdowns around the world, and we are working to make it easier than ever to return to your home country safely and without complications.
Are COVID-19 tests easy to get in Los Cabos?
Yes. There are numerous facilities to obtain both the PCR and the Antigen tests. To start, the Los Cabos International Airport offers both tests for a very good price to international travelers. At the airport the antigen test is about 450 pesos ($25 USD), and the PCR Test is about 1250 Pesos (about $70 USD). You receive the results in 30-45 minutes for antigen, and 24-72 hours for the PCR test. We recommend saving the airport as a last resort though as there are a lot of other facilities in both Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Just across the street from Dive Ninja Expeditions is a lab called Laboratorios Helena that offers both the Antigen and PCR tests. So if you’d like to skip the line at the airport you can go to the lab when you finish up your scuba diving tour, course, or expedition with us – feel free to ask one of our staff to show you where it is. Additionally many of the hotels in Los Cabos are now offering the tests in-house as a courtesy service for their guests so we recommend checking with your hotel too. There are also a lot of labs and hospitals that offer the tests. As well as concierge style delivery service that will come to your accommodation to administer the test, but fair warning the delivery service is a bit expensive compared to the other options.
For more information on PCR and Antigen test locations check out the Visit Los Cabos COVID Travel & Testing Information web page here or their COVID testing facilities list by clicking here. We highly recommend getting Dive Assure travel insurance or another travel assurance such as Allianz that helps to cover any trip cancellations, quarantine costs, or extra incurred costs related to COVID and your trip just in case you need it. It’s always better to be extra safe.
Can I get a COVID test at Dive Ninjas?
At the current moment we can not offer in-house testing at our shop as our shop does not have the facilities needed for it. But we are currently working on potential options with local labs for our guests to obtain tests on our expeditions and also onsite at the shop. We are hoping to roll this out for multi day expedition guests first, and then for our local diving guests shortly after. However, across the street from Dive Ninja Expeditions is a lab called Laboratorios Helena that offers both the Antigen and PCR tests. You can just stop by the lab before or after your diving tour, course, or expedition with us as there is no need for an appointment. Also, if you are staying at Casa Dorada to dive at our new Dive Ninja Dojo shop located inside the Casa Dorada hotel, the hotel offers onsite testing facilities. They have Antigen tests for $30 USD (24 hour or less results) and faster PCR tests than most locations (24 hours or less) for $220 USD. for You can learn more about their in-house testing by clicking here.
